Distillate Essential Oils

Distillation of essential oils

Now legal for everyone

Distillation equipment for theHerstellung Ätherischer Öle,  sowie Geisten aus Hydrolaten der Wasserdampfdestillation

The devices offered here may be legally purchased in Germany by private individuals without customs approval if they are not used for the production or purification of alcohol. Up to 2 litres capacity, these are also exempt from registration. For larger boilers, you must register them with your main customs office within 3 working days and swear that you will not use them for the production or purification of alcohol. Regardless of their size, never use the equipment with alcohol, not even with taxed alcohol. If you still wish to legally produce fruit or herbal spirits, use your distiller for steam distillation to flavour alcohol. You may legally distil hydrolates and essential oils. Then mix the hydrolate with clear, preferably tasteless alcohol (vodka, Primasprit). Since most essential oils are alcohol-soluble, you can use them, but only drop by drop. As a rule, you will already have a highly aromatic distillate, so it is best to remove the oil and use only the hydrolate. Experiment with the mixing ratio to find the right taste for you. Too much hydrolate can spoil the taste. For example, we have created a very good spirit from the hydrolate of a steam distillation of sage leaves during the first 15 minutes. For our taste, a volume ratio of 2 parts hydrolate, 3 parts 96% alcohol and 4 parts distilled water was optimal. If you prefer 40% alcohol, mix 1 part hydrolate with 2 parts 96% alcohol and 2 parts distilled water. This was also very tasty, although we personally preferred the first mixture. You can also purchase 96% Primasprit, taxed, from us. With a steam distiller and Primasprit, you can legally produce your favourite spirit. And along the way, you will discover – if you haven't already – your love for the scents of essential oils. You can find a good overview of various essential oils here: Essential oils.

GPSR information and manufacturer's instructions:

Information about copper stills can be found at the end of the respective product descriptions.

The following information applies to all our stainless steel distillation devices

Hazard warning: When used properly, our stainless steel distillers do not pose any particular hazards. All our devices are designed so that high pressures cannot build up. However, you should be aware that all parts become hot during distillation. . We therefore strongly recommend wearing protective gloves and goggles during distillation, refilling and dismantling. When using gas stoves, only devices with a safety pilot flame should be used. Gas appliances used indoors must be approved for indoor use.

Please be careful and observe the downloadable operating instructions.

accessory-set

Cooling set with pump for our stainless steel distillers up to 20 litres

This set contains everything you need to start serious distillation immediately, even with our unobtrusive 2-litre stainless steel distillers.

Set accessories

  1. 20 litre plastic tub as cooling water reservoir
  2. Powerful 230V cooling water pump with accessories for different hose diameters, sufficient for all our stainless steel stills up to 10 litres.
  3. Various 2m PVC hoses, 2 of which have hose fittings for the still cooler:
The first hose goes from the pump to the 1/2‘ connection of the condenser near the distillate outlet at the bottom. The second hose is connected to the 1/2’ connection for the hot waste water at the top of the condenser. The other end with the 3/4‘ connection is led to where the waste water should go, so back into the bucket when pumping. The 3/4’ connection is now new - previously this end remained open. The reason for this innovation is that you can replace the hoses if you have running water nearby. Most house connections have a 3/4’ thread, so you can connect the 2nd hose from the running water supply to the water inlet of the cooler. The 1st hose is then connected to the top of the cooler and the hot waste water now comes out of the black pump screw nipple. The pump is not needed for this cooling variant. So you now have two options for cooling. In addition to these two hoses, there are three hoses of different strengths for various applications.
  1. Plastic tap for cooling water control, suitable for the counterflow cooler.
  2. Scaled 100 ml measuring cylinder with foot to safely collect and measure the distillate.
  3. Cleaning brush.
  4. Floating thermometer for cooling water control if the hot waste water is allowed to flow back into the bucket. From 40° C, the water should either be cooled with ice or replaced.
  5. A roll of Teflon tape for sealing, e.g. if a seal fails during distillation.
